The time it takes to learn how to fly will vary from person to person. Transport Canada’s 10 hour minimum requirement for an Ultralight Permit is not realistic for most individuals to learn how to safely fly an Advanced Ultralight Aircraft, such as a Evektor Sport Star aircraft.
Expect to spend 25-40 hours during the training phase if you have no prior flying experience. A skilled and dedicated student can expect to complete the training in less than 6 months.
Expect to spend $8000-$10000 to learn how to fly an Advanced Ultralight.
The more frequently you fly, the cheaper you training costs will be overall.
A category 4, self-declared medical is required. The medical is a self-declaration of your medical fitness and requires the completion of the following form.
Yes, you will need to complete 20 hours of ground school and pass the Transport Canada ULTRA exam.

2. Aeronautical Radio Licensing Exam
3. Transport Canada ULTRA exam
Advanced Ultralights have manufacturer recommended maintenance that must be followed. This category is somewhat similar to the LSA category in the USA.
Advanced Ultralights also allow you to carry a passenger, whereas you cannot carry a passenger in a Basic Ultralight unless the passenger is a pilot or an instructor.
When flying a basic ultralight, all occupants are required to wear helmets. *Helmets are not required when flying an advanced ultralight.*
Flight time in ultralights may be counted towards higher Aeroplane category licences: 10 hours towards a PPL, 25 hours towards a Commercial, and 50 hours towards an Airline Transport licence.
To obtain a passenger carrying rating, the requirements are:
25 hours of total training including a minimum 15 hours of dual training, 5 hours of solo, and 2 hours dual cross-country flight time.
- 18 years of age or older
- Hold a Category 3 Medical Certificate valid for a Pilot Permit – Ultra-light Aeroplane
- Complete a minimum of 10 hours in instructional techniques
- Achieve 80% on the written examination Flight Instructor Rating Instructional Techniques (FITEN)
- Complete ground school training, including normal and emergency procedures, on ultra-light aeroplanes
- Obtain a minimum of 50 hours of flight time, with 5 hours dual minimum, 5 hours dual flight time on instructional techniques, 25 hours solo flight time minimum
- Successfully complete a flight test
